It is nearly two years since the MacLeod Report put employee engagement at the forefront of the business agenda. For the first time it produced compelling evidence of how vital engagement is in improving the bottom line. In his presentation at Bournemouth, David outlined what engagement is and what good engagement means in terms of better business outcomes.

See bottom of page for links to additional resourcesDavid says that when he asked people to give a good description of engagement he stopped counting at 56 definitions.

But he did say that one of the best was:

“There is a level of capability and potential in all of us. If managed in one way you get some of my potential. If managed another way, you get more of my potential – willingly offered.”

In terms of outcomes, good engagement means:

For the organisation

  • Better outcomes, better financial performance, higher levels of innovation and advocacy.

For the individual

  • Higher levels of wellbeing
  • A more satisfying workplace.

Through the recession:

  • Together continuing to build a better future.

David included some other interesting statistics:

  • 59% of the 'more engaged' say work brings out their best ideas
  • 3% of the 'less engaged' say that work brings out their best ideas
  • 67% of the 'more engaged' advocate their organisation
  • 3% of the 'less engaged' advocate their organisation.

David is also a strong advocate of thanking staff and praising them for their work and contributions. He said that we are not very good at doing this in this country.

“This is just putting back the gene that God removed from the British,” he said.
