TJ LarkinTJ Larkin, change management guru and co-author of the McGraw-Hill bestseller “Communicating Change”, was the headline speaker at this year’s CiB Conference. In an engaging and entertaining presentation he spoke about the three things that companies fail to do to make their change communications work.

He said they:

  • Start their communications too late
  • They fail to use frontline managers as communicators, and
  • They don’t communicate the future.

He says that his first rule is that employees “do not wait” for communication. TJ said: “You have to supply it or they will make it up.

“If rumours run riot, employees think their senior managers are cruel, incompetent or both.

“Without communication, employees turn against their managers and then the change. This is why 40% of mergers fail to get their cost synergies, why 64% of acquired firms fail to maintain their revenue growth in the first quarter after a merger and why companies beginning communication early see 20% better employee performance.”

In this seven-minute Podcast he spoke to Steve Nichols about his thoughts on communicating change.
