Suzanne Peck hands over the CiB chairman role to Paul Brasington.Paul Brasington is the new chairman of CiB. He took over the reins from Suzanne Peck at the association's AGM in Brighton.

Paul is passionate about communication and feels he is well placed to stand as CiB chairman again – he held the position in 2003/4 and received the chance to become the first person to fill the post twice as a result of a recent rule change.

So what of the future? If there is one role Paul believes that CiB should be best recognised for, it is professional development. “With no single established route into internal communications, it is currently hard for employers to measure candidates’ suitability, or set existing employees on the best training path,” he says.

“There’s a whole raft of courses out there, but they need pulling together. We are in by far the best position to do that, and so the aim is to provide an accreditation structure – basically, re-inventing the diploma the  Association used to have, and also developing a higher-level qualification.

“It’s imperative that we address the lack of craft skills in organizations. It’s not about turning people into great writers or designers, but showing them how to tell the difference between good and bad communications,” he adds.

  • CiB members can read a full interview with Paul in the June issue of communicators magazine, due out next week.
