ICon Awards 2011 – entry pack
The hunt is on for the icons of internal communication – IoIC ICons.
‘ICons’ is the name given to a new set of awards which will replace the longstanding Communicator of the Year awards this year.
Entry is now open and there are 14 categories available including best in-house team, rising star, best line manager, best editor, writer and designer, and the Internal Communicator of the Year. You can enter yourself or nominate someone from your team or business and nominations close on 5 September.
The prizes will be handed out during the awards dinner on 17 November at the London Landmark Hotel.

COTY Awards
The COTY awards were an opportunity to celebrate and reflect on a year of professional and personal achievement, to network with peers and to be proud of all that internal communication has achieved
Three other prizes are made at the awards lunch:
- Communicator of the Year (nominated by IoIC members)
- Diamond Award for Outstanding Achievement by an IoIC Member (decided by an IoIC panel)
- Best IoIC accreditation programme student (nominated by the IoIC’s Professional Development committee).

Internal communication is any communication designed to build a shared understanding and foster a sense of community within a clearly identified and discrete group.
This definition reflects the need to include communication within membership organisations and similar groups, as well as employee communication. The important distinction is from any form of marketing or external communicatio

IoIC presents its Communicator of the Year awards at the same time as the main awards.
Christina Schmid was named IoIC Communicator of the Year 2010 for championing better equipment for soldiers in Afghanistan and her patronage of the Tickets for Troops Charity. She received her award at the COTY lunch in London on Friday 26th November 2010.
Previous recipients include Michael Bishop, British Midland (1989), Howard Davies, then CBI but now deputy head of the Bank of England (1992), Roy Castle, posthumously, (1994), Matt Barrett, Barclays (2001), Major Sir Michael Parker (2002), John Timpson (2003) and Sainsbury's Justin King (2006), Deanna Oppenheimer (2007), David Fairhurst (2008) and Joan Bakewell (2009).
The Internal Communicator of the Year award is also given to an individual that the organisation feels has made a major contribution to IC over the last year. This year's recipient was Samantha Children, internal communications manager at QBE European Operations.
At the same time, IoIC presents:
- Diamond Award for Outstanding Achievement by an IoIC Member (decided by an IoIC panel)
- Best IoIC accreditation programme student (nominated by the IoIC’s Professional Development committee).
