With 47 classes to choose from and a drop in entry fees, organisers hope this year’s IoIC Awards will have something for everyone.
As the awards underwent a major revamp last year, changes this year have been about evolution rather than revolution, with the return of some old favourites and a couple of new classes.
We put some questions to awards chairman Louise Birkett.
Why the change in entry fees?
We felt we needed to acknowledge that economic times are still tough. We hope that cutting the entry fee to £90 plus VAT for members will help. But there is a catch – if you can’t make the April 19 deadline then a late entry fee applies and the price goes up to £130 plus VAT until April 30. The reason for the late entry fee is that it really helps the administrators if entries are on time. Prices are higher for non-members.
Tell me about the new classes?
There are two: one is for mobile communications, as we recognise that mobiles and tablets are channels. The other is an idea that’s been developed from a suggestion by the 30 under 30 group, which is for multi-digital channels. It recognises that sometimes you have to integrate digital channels to reach disparate audiences. I’m really excited by the potential in this one as I can see it developing into a strategic channels management class. But that will only happen if there’s a demand for it. We’ve also got two event classes now.
While accepting the multi-channel could develop into a strategy class, the changes are very channels-based; is that really a fair reflection of the work internal communicators do?
Yes and no. Fundamentally, most strategic work that communicators do requires at least one channel, often more, to reach audiences, so there’s a dependency there which the awards reflect. We’ve kept the same number of strategy classes but the feedback we’ve received was all around the channels classes. If the feedback this year is all about the strategy classes then you might be asking the opposite question next year!

If you think your work is brilliant – or if you need to measure yourself against the best – the opportunity is here.

Entries are now being taken for the newly revamped Institute of Internal Communication Awards 2012, and there are 39 awards spread across eight sections.

They have been updated to celebrate the kind of work being done every day by IC professionals in the UK. They cover everything from campaigns, innovationdigital media, print mediawritingevents and design to individual work as aninternal comms ICon.

The aim is to discover the best work that’s going on now in internal communication – and spread the word.

“The IoIC Awards are not like other competitions,” explains awards chairman Paul Brasington. “We’re not here to make a profit, our only concern is to pick out best practice and hold it up to show what can be achieved.

“We’re interested in excellence because we want to help everyone achieve it.”

Every entry (except the ICons) will receive an individual constructive critique, written by experienced judges, to help you take your work forward.

There are many good reasons to enter the IoIC Awards – and here are just five:
    • improve your expertise, via judges’ feedback
    • justify your budget
    • raise the bar
    • inspire your team
    • enhance our profession.

2012 will see one awards scheme and one awards dinner, which will be the internal communication event of the year.

The entry deadline is February 17, and the IoIC Awards dinner will be held at the Hilton Park Lane in London on June 15.
