Two very different ways of tackling diversity came under the spotlight at the CiB conference in Newcastle today with representatives of a top London law firm and the UK military discussing the issues.

Stuart Morrison, internal communications manager with Allen & Overy, told delegates how his company set about encouraging and nurturing youngsters from primary school age, through secondary education and, ultimately, university, so that it could tap into a graduate talent pool that was as diverse as possible.

Meanwhile, Dr Steven Windmill outlined his role when, as chief operations officer for the defence training rationalisation programme, he had to secure co-operation across much of the Armed Forces while, at the same time, reducing the training budget by £4 billion.

“We not only had to face all the usual barriers of race, faith, sex and creed, we also had cultural obstacles to overcome from the different branches of the Armed Forces, like the Army, Navy and RAF, all with their own traditions, and even from the different ranks within those organisations,” he said.

“Getting all these organisations to work together, to understand that some parts of their training programme could be common to all but that other aspects had to be organisation and culture specific, took time but was ultimately worth it.”
