Communications Excellence Awards reward the best

The very best in the industry were rewarded for their efforts at yesterday's CiB Communications Excellence Awards, held at The Savoy in London, after a record number of entries had been received.

The awards celebrated today's integrated approach to communications, with many different media now being used to communicate effectively.

CiB president Alan Peaford, who presented the awards, said: "Strategic thinking is the bedrock of today's internal communications. As a body of professionals, we're moving away from relying on any single medium to communicate to our target audience."

The award winners were:

Class 1: A communications programme aimed at an organisation's employees

Class winner: Anne Marie Bell at Reuters for 'Living Fast' - a single day that mobilised Reuters people to support its three-year 'Fast Forward' transformation programme.

Awards of excellence went to:
Hilary Wingfield at Premier Farnell plc for a multi-lingual programme designed to launch and internalise the company's Core Values to 5,000 employees.

The Team, for Vodafone Group's Global Internal Corporate Social Responsibility Report.

The Internal Communications team at Co-Operative Financial Services for Open magazine, a publication produced following the merger of The Co-operative Bank and Co-Operative Insurance Company.

Vivien Ronco for 'Moving to a new work environment' produced for Visteon - an employee communications programme for a move to a new work environment in both Germany and the UK.

Class 2: A communications programme aimed at an organisation's external customers

Class winner: External Relations at Three Valleys Water for the Water Mains Improvement Programme.

Awards of Excellence went to:

Redhouse Lane Communications for a DTI business support product called 'Achieving best practice in your business' that amalgamated five previous products and provided practical help for businesses in improving the way they work.

Talisman Communications for Southern Water's Waterwise Gardening - a programme to raise awareness of how to use water wisely in the garden.

The Team for the NHS Leadership Centre, for Senior Leaders' Development Resources - a more customer-focused portfolio or programmes and supporting communications.

Class 3: Investors/Shareholders - a programme aimed at the audience of corporate organisations

Class winner: Addison Corporate Marketing for Syngenta AG's annual report.

Awards of Excellence went to:

Paula Cooper for Geest PLC's annual report and accounts.

Addison Corporate Marketing for BAA Plc's annual report.

Class 4: A communications programme aimed at a community audience, including non-profit making and volunteer organisations

Class winner: Stockport Council for 'Let's Get Personal' an integrated communications campaign to raise awareness of the individual's responsibility to keep the borough tidy.

Awards of Excellence went to:

The Department for Education and Skills, for Governors' Newsletter, a publication to link the department to its 350,000 school governors in England.

John Hanlon at HBOS for a programme to raise awareness of HBOS' s charitable Foundation among employees.

The PR Shop for work on Community Matters, a programme aimed at building trust between RMC Rugby Cement and the population of Rugby.

Class 5: A communications programme aimed at the employees or external audience of an organisation that has undergone major change or merger

Class winner: Lloyd's TSB Asset Finance division for their merger communications

Awards of Excellence went to:

Addleshaw Goddard, for the first annual review following their merger and produced by Pauffley Creative Communications.

Class 6: A communications programme aimed at internal/external audiences about a change of identity

Class winner: Abbey's Employee Communications team for their relaunch communications.

Awards of Excellence went to:

The Team for BBC Training and Development's 'Be Your Best' communications programme.

Megan Wiltshire at BAA Terminal 5 for 'History in the Making', a campaign to engage and motivate the workforce at Heathrow Terminal 4, by Butterfield Morris Bushell.

Class 7: A communications campaign on a single issue

Class winner: Peter Boxell for the East London Line Project communications programme.

Awards of Excellence went to:

Emma Oliver at Sage UK for a communications campaign to support the move of more than 1,000 employees to a new building.

The Halcrow Corporate Communications Team for 'Technology and Innovation in Halcrow', a video designed to support a management seminar focusing on these themes.

Class 8 - Professional skills - New and experienced editor

New Editor, class winner: Mark Glover, Editor of AWE Today.

Existing Editor, class winner: Joe Gardiner, Editor of Landscape, the official journal of the Landscape Institute.

Awards of Excellence went to:

(New editor) Gabrielle Jackson, Editor of the platform, the staff publication for Tube Lines.

(Existing editor) Clare Parry, Corporate News Manager at Aviva (Norwich Union)
