IoIC Scotland was delighted to present the award for Outstanding Contribution to the Communication Industry to Ron Aitken at Friday night’s Scottish Communication Awards.

The award is not one that can be directly entered. IoIC Scotland members are invited to nominate someone they feel has made an impression on the industry in Scotland over a number of years. The IoIC Scotland committee then meets to select a winner from the nominees.

“Ron has worked in the communications industry for more than 25 years and thoroughly deserves this award,” said Roy Carter, IoIC Scotland Regional Director.

Ron started life in the industry within a corporate environment at Standard Life and then John Menzies, two of Scotland’s most successful companies. He then took his in-house experience ‘agency-side’, joining Edinburgh-based Carter Rae in 1990. There he was instrumental in helping to build up the company as one of the most widely respected Scottish-based communications agencies and the only one to provide an annual conference for Scottish-based communication professionals.

He led the way in the 1990s in insisting that clients would benefit from measuring the effectiveness of their communications through reader surveys and other means (it hardly sounds revolutionary now but wasn’t done much then!).

He also helped devise the first Internal Communications survey in Scotland aimed at establishing a benchmark and looking at trends in internal communication.

Over the years he has supported major international companies through periods of great change – such as the merger of TotalFina and Elf Aquitaine in 2000.

He is a fellow of the Institute of Internal Communication, a former chairman of CiB Scotland and is also a long standing member of the CIPR. Today, as director of his new agency, Resolve Creative – established in late 2009 – he continues to provide professional development seminars and workshops for those within the industry and provides editorial and project management support on behalf of a wide range of clients.

In addition to this, he also provides generous time to support students in the industry – in particular those on Edinburgh Napier University’s BA (Hons.) Communication, Advertising and Public Relations degree.
