Jim Adamson, who was recognised in 2008 for his Outstanding Contribution to the Communications Industry award, has died.

The founder of the award-winning agency, Speakeasy Productions, he was also named Great Scot of the Year in 1998.

Born in 1949, Jim was accidentally shot during a Territorial Army exercise in 1966, an incident which left him paralysed from the chest down.

But his subsequent disability never held back his career. After studying at Stirling University, Duncan of Jordanstone and the Open University, he thrived in communication.

Jim founded Speakeasy Productions in 1993 and it grew steadily to become one of the most successful corporate production companies in the UK operating from its two production bases in central London and Scotland. Clients include Lloyds Banking Group, NHS, ScottishPower, Food Standards Agency, the Metropolitan Police, Rothschild Bank, BAE Systems and many more.

Speakeasy currently employs 35 people, and has won dozens of awards for video and event productions. Jim was managing director until handing over the reins to his fellow directors in 2010, when he became chairman.

He was well known in Scotland and in the wider business world, making a huge contribution to the community and charitable organisations throughout the UK.

For six years he was a judge for the annual awards of the British Association of Industrial Editors (BAIE), which became Communicators in Business (CiB) before switching again to the Institute of Internal Communication.

It was during the CiB era in 2008 that Jim was presented with the Award for Outstanding Contribution to the Communications Industry.

Speakeasy’s managing director Jonathan Young says: “Jim's positive outlook, whatever the odds, was the foundation of Speakeasy's success. He was a strong uncompromising character, inspiring and entertaining to those of us who knew him. With his wife Stella, Jim fostered the family atmosphere that we all at Speakeasy value so much. We will all miss him.”
