CiB’s landmark annual conference at the Carden Park Hotel near Chester on 12th – 14th May 2010 will explore the potential of active communication for making a real difference as the economy starts to recover - while also celebrating CiB’s rebirth as the Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC).

A growing body of evidence has shown the concrete business benefits of effective internal communication – ranging from healthy profits and stock exchange performance, to low staff turnover and high levels of innovation.
However, for organizations to be able to move forward in the current environment, what constitutes effective internal communication and how can practitioners make a real positive impact?
Through a wide-ranging programme of speaker presentations, case studies, panel debate and break-out workshops, ‘The Power of Active Communication’ will help delegates to develop their own practical solutions. Session topics include: effective leadership and making line managers better communicators; helping employers understand the value of the IC professional; the role of social media in uniting employees; and how communication impacts behavioural change.
For the first-time ever, the conference will also feature an in-depth masterclass on the first evening, which this year will be looking at developing effective employee surveys.

Highlights include:
- Synopsis managing director Bill Quirke, will examine the seven deadly sins of line manager communication and how communicators can support leaders and line managers more effectively.
- Gemma Pearson, Work Foundation researcher, will outline the findings of a study which reveals the essence of outstanding leadership as a highly people-centred approach.
- Ian Pearson, the man who invented text messaging and was BT’s futureologist for 16 years, will paint a vivid picture of how we can expect working lives to change and the implications for communication practice.
- Dean Morley, Deputy HR Director for the Pension Disability and Carers Service (part of the Department for Works and Pensions) will look at behavioural change in the face of major upheaval, drawn from his own experiences at DWP.
- Eleanor Stewart of the Cabinet Office digital engagement team and formerly Head of Internal Communication at the Serious Fraud Squad will look at using social media tools to dismantle tradition silos.
- Helen Farrar, Virgin Media head of internal communication, will explore the importance of starting with the people rather than the technology when developing a social network.
- John Smythe, MD of Engage for Change, will help delegates to incorporate the engagement process within the business cycle so that it is integral to improving performance.

In the final panel session, Keith Bottomley, head of internal communication at RBS, Penny Lawson, head of internal communication at BA and Helena Memory, founding partner at Hedron, will discuss how to rethink, reengage and rebuild a valued communication culture in a changed decade.
CiB chairman Dominic Walters will also introduce delegates to the new Institute and its role in the future of internal communication. The conference will feature celebrations to mark the official change of name and status of CiB to the Institute of Internal Communication.
