| Kate Wilson recently graduated with an MA in Corporate Communication from Sheffield Hallam University. Kate received a CiB prize for her dissertation entitled "Job satisfaction of self-employed communications professionals". The aim of the study was to ascertain whether UK self-employed communications professionals are more or less satisfied with their jobs than when organisationally-employed, and what factors affect their satisfaction.
But reduced social interaction and lack of business infrastructure, among other issues, negatively affect satisfaction. Yet, even with the reported disadvantages, participants were still satisfied on the whole and the majority would not return to employment. A minority contradict this view - a small number of questionnaire participants said they were either slightly unhappy or completely dissatisfied now compared to when they were in employment. |
Her research found that, overall, self-employed communicators are more satisfied now than when employed. Factors such as increased autonomy, schedule flexibility, work-life balance and enhanced variety and type of work positively affect satisfaction levels.
