Twelve great principles for communicating cuts
Knowledge Bank
As we move into a new year, the impact of last autumn’s Comprehensive Spending Review will really be felt – particularly in the public sector. In a feature in the January 2011 issue of “Inside Out”, IoIC's member magazine, Tim Smith offers some tip tips on communicating bad news.

While the scale of the cuts – an estimated 490,000 job losses – was not unexpected and many organisations had already begun significant transformation programmes, 2011 will see things really start to bite.

There will be great pressure on public sector internal communicators to explain the difficult choices that have to be made, while at the same time helping keep the workforce motivated and focused on service delivery.

Tim suggests a 12-point approach:

1) Have a clear plan

2) Develop a clear story:

3) Show strong leadership

4) Equip your managers to communicate

5) Avoid a communications vacuum

6) Align your internal and external communications

7) Recognise the emotional impact of change

8) Make sure people can give their views

10) Work with the trades unions

11) Humanise the process

12) Don’t forget the people who are left
