It seems that our ezine readers trust their immediate boss, but are not too sure about his boss, or even his boss’s boss. That was the conclusion of the latest ezine survey. You told us that 70% of you totally trust your boss to treat you fairly and honestly and look after your interests at work, but only 40% of you trust his boss to do the same. By the time we had gone up a further rung of the ladder to his boss, that figure had fallen to 33%. But it was your comments that were really eye-opening. “The head of my team thinks only of his own interests and never supports the team although quite happy to take the credit for our successes. He may as well not be there for all the value he adds,” said one response. “However, my boss is a fabulous bluffer and we have become expert fire-fighters and together achieve a great deal!” Another wrote: “The higher up the chain you go, the less they deal with people and the more we are just units of production. It doesn't matter what people say, we are all expendable as long as the shareholders can keep making a profit. “The higher up the tree, the more detached the bosses become, with what appears to be much less interest in the people and much more interest in finances, strategy and delivery - plus, of course, change (the only constant)." And finally: “I don’t trust anyone - I work for the BBC!”“The difficulty lies with my boss's boss who frequently lands us in it through over-promising, lack of contact, lack of consultation, lack of basic information sharing and frequent mistakes. But it was not all bad news. Another wrote: “I have regular one-to-one time with my boss who is extremely professional and supportive. We share a similar life experience, which I believe has helped us to develop an empathetic relationship where we can be totally open with each other. I could categorically state that my current boss is the best I have ever experienced." Keep an eye open for future polls in the ezine. |
