The Internal Communications Advisor is a key figure within the central Internal Communications team, playing a significant role in ensuring the team meets its functional goals of:

Participating in the delivery of strategy by contributing high-quality communications advice and support
Owning and using core communications channels effectively
Being well-connected with all stakeholder groups, understanding and feeding back impact
Being a centre of excellence and a source of guidance and support for colleagues engaged in communication activities throughout the business

 
The Internal Communications Advisor is a trusted advisor to key stakeholders, including project sponsors and managers, and colleagues in the firm’s Business Teams.
 
The Internal Communications Advisor role models proactivity, positivity and excellent communication practice.   
 
Key Dimensions
The role has influence over the spend of the functional budget.
Provides support and guidance as necessary to the Internal Communications Assistant.
The role manages core global internal communications channels.
The role involves access to confidential information. 
Supports key transformation programmes within the business.
Key point of contact for people across the firm who need a fast response on information about the firm and how to access it. 
Has global advisory responsibilities via informal relationships with colleagues worldwide whose functional remits include internal communication.  
 
Key responsibilities and challenges
Editor The bulletin and Partnership matters 
Full editorial responsibility for the primary written internal comms channels in the firm – The bulletin, which goes out weekly with a circulation of approx. 5,500, and the primary written internal comms channel for partners – Partnership matters, which goes out weekly with a circulation of approx. 450.
Plans and advises on content, format and key messages contained in articles, and discusses implications of the communication with contributors, links topics and people for the purposes of communication. Ensures an excellent standard of writing and articles that reflect the firm’s recently refreshed strategy, culture and values, sharing best practice across the firm and keeping people abreast of the progress we are making toward our strategic priorities. 
The role involves proactively generating engaging content. Translates sometimes complex legal concepts and terminology into clear, easily digestible and interesting communication. Liaises with PR to ensure, where possible, that key developments picked up on by the press are communicated internally first. The role also ensures that The bulletin and Partnership matters continuously improve to meet the needs of readers, developing and adapting as necessary.

Generating content
Proactively generates content for distribution via core communications channels to support strategic priorities and in response to other internal and external developments arising.
This role requires a good knowledge and understanding of the firm, its culture and what is going on so that information can be shared in a targeted, timely way.

Manages the Intranet homepage news area
Responsible, with support from the Internal Communications Assistant, for the intranet homepage news sections, including Featured News, Global News, and Office news for London and Colchester, ensuring they deliver up-to-date and globally relevant and engaging stories to share news across the firm.

Manages London communications
Leads on London-based communication campaigns with support on execution from Internal Communications Assistant. Maintains the framework for comms in London, ensuring that people adhere to the official channels. Involves influencing, problem solving and creativity. Looks for ways to enhance and optimise the visibility and traction of campaigns in London through existing and new channels. Advises and supports Internal Communications Assistant on managing existing channels.

‘Gatekeeper’ for blanket communications to London/firmwide.

Business Teams communications
Has specific responsibility for internal communications strategy for Business Teams globally (c. 40% of business). Works with the CFOO and Director/Associate Director group to determine best approach in line with firmwide strategy, solve problems, and ensure appropriate resourcing to execute communication plans. Provides direction for, production of and signs off Business Services communication content.
Support in relation to communications across business-services, including leading on executing the BS communication strategy and sitting on the regular business services forum.

Supports team on strategic and major change projects
Takes communications lead on some projects and initiatives (specifically regarding London communications campaigns as above).

Best practice
Promotes best practice communication principles; being available to colleagues across the business for training, advice and support on communications skills.
Has a strong network across the firm and builds relationships to ensure the team is plugged into key initiatives. Helps people and teams to connect with each other to improve firmwide cohesion of campaigns.
 
Brand custodian
Point of contact on brand issues, advising colleagues on visual and textual elements (style, tone of voice) of internal communications materials.

Essential:
Degree in any subject
Desirable:
Degree in journalism/communications

Practical Experience
Essential:
4+ years professional experience
Background or experience of writing/journalism

Experience in a professional services communications team role

Skilled in standard programmes including Microsoft Word and PowerPoint
Keen eye for presentation
Excellent attention to detail and proof-reading ability
