As internal communication plays an increasingly strategic role inside organisations, simply being a good writer is no longer enough.

We also need to know how to break the rules to make writing more engaging. We need to be able to find and tell compelling stories and shape strategic content. We need to have the confidence to help leaders tell their stories and understand how writing can influence behaviour in positive way. We also need to understand how to make our writing more inclusive and be conscious of approaching writing in an ethical way.

This virtual workshop provides you the skills, knowledge and confidence to take a more strategic approach to your writing.



At the end of the course, participants will:

  • understand how taking a strategic approach to writing can impact business success
  • know how to apply a more strategic approach to writing in their day-to-day role
  • have confidence in their ability to advise senior stakeholders on strategic content


Course format

The course is split into two half-day sessions conducted online. You will have the opportunity to view slides as well as see and interact with your tutor and fellow attendees. Exercises will be set after the first session to be shared in the second session.

Each half-day session is 3.5 hours long with one break.

Session One:

  • How to break the rules for more engaging writing
  • Ethical writing
  • How writing can influence behaviour
  • Advanced editing

Session Two:

  • How to make writing more inclusive
  • Cognitive context
  • Storytelling
  • Corporate narrative
  • How to help leaders tell stories


About the trainer

Helen Deverell has written and edited content for 50 plus organisations including Grant Thornton, The Guardian, Royal Mail Group, Pinsent Masons, 3i, Tesco, ScottishPower, Barclays, Oxford University Press, The World Gold Council, Selecta, Avon, KPMG, and Sainsbury's over her 12-year career in internal communication.

Helen combines her writing skills and experience with her internal communication insight to provide attendees with the capabilities they need to write for internal audiences.

Helen is also an award-winning internal communicator, a Fellow of the IoIC, a regular internal communication blogger and a frequent industry award judge.
