The Future of Internal Communication podcast returns!

In September 2021, we launched a new podcast series – The Future of Internal Communication.

Somewhat of an experiment at the time, we wanted something to accompany our Future of Work series, to serve those IoIC members who prefer audio to written reports and material.

We've been blown away by its reception.

Co-hosted by IoIC CEO, Jennifer Sproul, leadership communication expert Dominic Walters, and myself, Cathryn Barnard, in each episode we invited a guest to come and chat with us. Selecting one future of work trend, we picked each other's brains for what this might mean for the internal communication profession. Our aim has been to illustrate ways in which internal comms is likely to evolve and expand.

We've had some fantastic conversations.

We've examined the hardwired human skills of communication and collaboration. We invited Making the Connections author Bill Quirke to look back at the history of the internal communication function and to chat with us about its evolution and where he sees the profession heading.

We've discussed the changing workplace and how factors including COVID-19, digital communication and the changing role of business in society upshift the importance of effective internal communication. We've discussed how social media is changing the face of leadership communication and we've explored the role of communication in workplace learning.

Ranjit Sidhu, who teaches part of the IoIC's Masters in Internal Communication Management, came to chat with us about the criticality of internal communication in organisational change programmes, a topic that's so key right now with so much transformation happening around us.

The feedback we've received, from members and non-members alike, and from around the UK and beyond, has been incredibly supportive and encouraging. It's clear internal communicators are passionate about serving their organisations and want to be kept appraised of all the trends transforming both their workplaces and the work they do.

With that in mind, I'm thrilled that we've got a whole new schedule of podcasts that will air throughout the course of 2022.

Starting in February, we'll be releasing a new episode every fortnight. We've got some very exciting guests lined up to discuss some of the hottest topics of 2022. We're going to explore the opportunity for internal communication in enabling:

  • employee voice
  • wellbeing
  • storytelling
  • hybrid working
  • meeting effectiveness
  • alignment
  • confidence and resilience
  • emergent business operating models
  • social and environmental activism
  • recruitment and retention

... And more.

It's been an absolute joy to chat with the various specialists in their field, and I'm sure I speak on behalf of us all as co-hosts when I say that our heads have been blown away at times by the thought-provoking nature of the conversations.

What started as an experiment has shifted into a medium that's helping not only us as hosts, but also the audience tuning in, to reflect more deeply on workplace transformation. And more importantly, the areas where we can all learn, grow and adapt to leverage the internal communication opportunities in the future of work, as they arise.

The IoIC remains committed to helping its members navigate these new work landscapes.

How we communicate matters. Effective communication underpins a healthy society. It's what keeps us tethered within our communities when challenges present.

Internal communication, regardless of the medium, is the lifeblood of organisational success – it's what keeps us connected, engaged and inspired to continuously push towards organisational goals and objectives.

We hope our next series of recorded conversations continue to motivate and inspire you, helping to spotlight the professional opportunities that lie ahead.
