Since its inception at the start of 2018, FutureNet – the network for newcomers to internal communication – has gone from strength to strength. This year, we've refined the purpose and key objectives of the network – to develop professional and personal skills of IC newcomers; to raise awareness of internal communication as a career of choice; and to champion the importance of diversity and inclusion for a profession fit for the future – and our committee of passionate and dedicated professionals have used their skills, knowledge and expertise to deliver events and content to support us in achieving them.

"One of my FutureNet highlights this year has been seeing the committee grow, with the addition of Kim Sklinar, Amy Holmes and Sarah Whitehouse who will be flying the FutureNet flag in the North. The dedication that all committee members have shown to the network and its objectives has been truly inspiring and I'm excited to continue to work with them all next year to support anyone who is new to the internal communication profession with their development and encourage anyone who is considering internal comms as a career path to pursue it."

Sarah Magee, Professional Development Manager, IoIC

"For me, seeing how the FutureNet committee has grown and developed and how its members have grown closer in order to achieve a common goal has to be my highlight of this year. The committee are really working together and thinking strategically about how to inspire people to start a career in internal comms from the beginning and - as our famous phrase reads – not falling into it but falling for it."

Daniela Girardi, Senior Marketing Executive, IoIC

Below are just some of the highlights of the past year from our committee members:

"It's been so great to see the network and committee grow this year, welcoming more IC newbies to the fold and getting our first regional committee representatives in the North and Wales. My personal highlight was seeing our IC careers guide published. Bringing it together was a happy challenge for Rachel Bowyer and me. I'm really excited to see what we can do with it next year to inform and inspire the next generation of comms professionals."

Becky Leonard, Insight and Content Manager, Sequel Group

"My 2019 highlight definitely has to be hosting my first FutureNet event on mental health and wellbeing at work. It was amazing to challenge myself, put my skills to the test and see it all come together. It's also really helped to inform how we'll structure our events going forwards, with key speakers followed by breakout sessions where people can discuss challenges and brainstorm ideas in a safe space. In 2020, I'm hopeful that we'll grow our network and that we'll be able to host FutureNet events in other regions across the UK."

Lucy Aaron, Content Creator, Marston's PLC

"My highlight of this year was joining the FutureNet committee, speaking about FutureNet at this year's IoIC #BetterConnected conference, and logging my first full year of CPD!"

Kimberley-Marie Sklinar, Internal Communications Partner at StepChange Debt Charity

"My FutureNet highlight for 2019 is that we've started the ball rolling to bring FutureNet to the North. We have loads of huge corporate businesses in the North, supported by an abundance of talent and emerging talent. FutureNet can help to ensure a support network and development opportunities are available for the emerging IC talent. I'm thrilled to be leading on this with Sarah Whitehouse and Kimberley-Marie Sklinar."

Amy Holmes, IC and Engagement Consultant, Marshalls PLC

"My FutureNet highlight of 2019 was having the opportunity to host a session on our Kerry Foods Trailblazers campaign – the IoIC's Grand Prix Award Winner of 2018! It was a privilege to share an insight into our award-winning engagement campaign with the network and a lovely opportunity to reflect on what we achieved as a business and the learnings I took away from the experience. It's also been great to get to know fellow IC professionals within FutureNet and hear from many inspiring speakers throughout the year. I'm looking forward to seeing the FutureNet family continue to grow in 2020!"

Jacqueline Ryan, Internal Communications and Employee Engagement Advisor, Kerry Foods
