As internal communicators, a powerful way to build influence with others is to help them to find their own solutions to their challenges. This requires us to be have the skill to flex our approach from that of expert to one of coach. We need the confidence to pose searching questions and then listen with full attention rather than providing the answers ourselves. This workshop will help communication professionals acquire the basics of coaching skills, knowing how and when to start, progress and end an effective coaching conversation with their stakeholders. It will address identifying the right opportunities to coach, gaining permission to do and gaining the confidence to use a coaching model.

This highly experiential virtual learning course is delivered over three live sessions. It gives delegates opportunities to support and learn from one another during the session and importantly, in between modules. It will equip internal communicators with the skills and knowledge to support their colleagues, direct reports and line managers within their organisation to increase their own communication skills.


Learning objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will: 

  • Have a clear understanding of what coaching involves
  • Be familiar with the skills and techniques needed to manage an effective coaching conversation
  • Have practised coaching and have the confidence to continue coaching in the organisation


The programme consists of 

Part One (13th May, 9:30 - 11:00)

  • Contracting: expectations on the part of coach and client
  • Understanding the rationale and benefits of coaching
  • Establishing goals and outcomes

Part Two (17th May, 9:30 - 12:00)

  • Understanding and working with all aspects of a coaching model
  • How to question
  • How to listen with mind and body
  • Establishing practice opportunities
  • Dealing with resistance and limiting beliefs

Part Three (26th May, 9:30 - 12:00)

  • Action Learning
  • Reporting back
  • Addressing questions and challenges
  • Refining practice based on outcomes
  • Building skills

Who should attend?

This course is aligned to the Influencing and Advising area of the IoIC profession map and specifically covers the knowledge and skills described at levels three and four. The course is most suitable for internal communication professionals who have a leadership and management role and a clear mandate to develop and support others in their organisations


About the trainer

Sheila Hirst has specialised in leadership and line manager communication and development for over 30 years. She has worked in senior in-house roles and as a coach and change consultant in the UK, Europe, Asia and the US, supporting leadership teams across a range of sectors. She has published research on the role of the coach in developing Authentic Leadership and the links between Authentic Leadership and Cross - Cultural Communication Effectiveness.

Sheila has an MA in Coaching and mentoring Practice from Oxford Brookes Business School, is an APECS accredited Executive Master Coach, and past national Chairman and Fellow of the Institute of Internal Communication.
