In an increasingly global working world, good intercultural communication skills are essential for internal communicators. 

In this interactive and thought-provoking workshop, participants become more mindful of the language they use and how it affects collaboration, engagement and wellbeing.

Through a series of short tasks and first hand audio accounts from international professionals, participants learn and apply tips and strategies on how to adapt their language in order to be more effective and productive in the global workplace.

Whether you work in an internationally diverse organisation or with international clients and customers, attending this training can help you:

Who is the workshop for?

Global & Intercultural Communication Skills is aimed at professionals who speak English as a first or additional language. 

The workshop is aligned to the Understanding People and Cultures Profession Area and is particularly suited to those working at levels 2 and 3.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the workshop participants will be able to:

  • Identify language that can be difficult for people who speak English as an additional language
  • Demonstrate a more conscious use of language particularly with regard to speed, politeness etc
  • Facilitate clearer online communication/phone calls
  • Develop more effective written and presentation skills
  • Recognise how differences within internationally diverse groups can affect cohesion and collaboration (eg time-keeping and deadlines)
  • Assess how language affects identity and wellbeing.

The course will cover

  • Ambiguous language and implied meaning
  • How to create positive dynamics in an internationally diverse workplace
  • The challenges of online communication
  • Adapting talks and presentations for an international audience
  • Writing clearer emails
  • Intercultural competence training with regards to politeness, humour, small talk etc.
  • How language affects identity and well-being

The workshop will include breakout discussions, interactive activities and audio of first-hand accounts from non-native English speakers either working or studying in the UK.
