Group Membership

Imperial Brands share their experience of IoIC membership

"Being involved in shaping the future of the profession is the other main reason for joining."

Why did you join as a group member?

Simply because the IoIC is the only professional organisation dedicated to Internal Communications. I have to admit that at the time I did not think it was perfect, but as a new CEO was coming on board I thought it was an opportunity to help to shape the newly evolving organisation. Being involved in shaping the future of the profession is the other main reason for me joining. Over many years I have had the benefit in my career of others giving me their time, advice and expertise; I’m keen to continue the tradition of this very philanthropic profession and do my part to pass on what I’ve learned along the way.

Have you used the benefits? What’s been of most value to you?

I found the new competency framework very useful in shaping new roles, and courses have been very beneficial to my team. I find the most useful element is the annual conference where I can see at first hand some of the best examples of what’s being delivered, but also meet colleagues from other businesses and exchange ideas.

If you are able, please give us an insight of your team

I have four Business Partners working to support a global business of 30,000 employees. Two are based in the UK and two in Germany. They are senior level professionals who operate at the level of advice and consultancy to the areas of the business they work with. We outsource much of the production of deliverables to agencies with whom we have developed close working relationships.

Has membership helped your team in the day-to-day work? If so, please could you describe how?

I would describe it as being more confident that there is a professional body out there who is driving forward the profession. I think in the every day we tend to support each other and look to the website for case studies or references if we get stuck.

Would you recommend group membership to other organisations and why?

Yes. If you want to be treated as a professional, you have to be part of the profession.

What do you think of the re-launched IoIC profession map and have you used it?

Very useful – see above.
