Group Membership

RBS share their experience of IoIC membership

"I would always recommend being a member of the professional organisation associated with your discipline as it gives you credibility."

Why did you join as a group member?

I first became a member over ten years ago when I first got into the Internal Comms profession. I was attracted to joining because of the professionalism it gave to the job and to connect with best practice across the discipline. I moved into doing Public Relations for a while but when I moved back to internal comms, re-joining the IoIC was one of the first things I did.

Have you used the benefits? What’s been of most value to you?

Yes. The most valuable from me was the professional qualifications I received. I studied for both a diploma and an advance diploma in internal comms with the IoIC a few years ago before I moved into PR. It was great to have this on my CV and to make networks with other comms professionals at the same point in our careers. I also use the monthly magazine and email to see what else is going on in the discipline and what we can learn from it.

If you are able, please give us an insight of your team

I am Head of Planning for NatWest Group’s Business (internal) communications team and my team not only coordinate all the plans to communicate to 60k colleagues but also manage the budgets and lead campaigns on big bank-wide initiatives such as launching the bank’s new Purpose and an all staff virtual colleague event.

Has membership helped your team in the day-to-day work? If so, please could you describe how?

Yes, mainly on the learning from the industry. I confess, we often get bogged down in the delivery and we definitely need to spend more time on our own development and taking advantage of what the IoIC can offer.

Would you recommend group membership to other organisations and why?

Yes. I would always recommend being a member of the professional organisation associated with your discipline as it gives you credibility. It also shows your staff you are willing to spend money on their development too.

What do you think of the re-launched IoIC profession map and have you used it?

I think it’s great and is very linked in with organisations being purpose-led (exactly what NatWest is striving for too).
