‘Gifted’ Sue awarded Internal Communicator of the Year

The IoIC’s coveted Internal Communicator of the Year award has been presented to Sue Palfrey, Head of Internal Comms at the National Trust.

The award was presented at the ICon awards event at the London Stock Exchange. It is presented every year to the person that IoIC believes is proving their impact and effectiveness in the profession.
This is the citation given by IoIC President, Suzanne Peck, for Sue at the event:
“We do a lot of listening at the IoIC, and reading, and evaluating and chatting to people - because we are always looking out for who is making a difference in internal comms.

Those we believe are shaping communications, building IC reputation and who are shining lights in the comms sky are considered for our annual communicator of the year award.

This year we are presenting it to Sue Palfrey who is Head of IC at National Trust.

Sue is head of function but none of the Trusts’ IC people were actually part of her team, being mostly embedded in the regional operational structure.

She has blended them into a very effective IC network and, in her three years at the Trust, she’s gained the support of the NT's senior decision makers for her strategy, as well as seeing through a potentially transformative intranet, which on its own would make a great master class in stakeholder management and influence-building.

Before joining the Trust, Sue was a comms strategist and account manager at a Bristol agency, and had worked in IC at Virgin Media for eight years.

The thread that runs through Sue's career is her advocacy for internal communications. She’s fantastic at relationship building and really gets under the skin of what she is doing to understand the challenge inside out.

She wrote a blog last year saying that Internal communicators have a special gift, transcending the past, the present and the future by linking messages for today and tomorrow.

We believe that Sue has that special gift which is why we are recognising her talent and her dedication to delivering the best in internal communication - today and for tomorrow. “
We are also pleased to annouce the winners of this years ICon Awards, which celebrate and recognise the people who are demonstrating excellence and consistently turn theory into great communication.
