The Institute of Internal Communication (IoIC) is launching a new membership system as a first step towards driving standards and credibility in the profession.

All Institute members will be classified as one of four grades, linking membership to professional development for the first time.

“This is the first of many steps towards improving professional standards and maintaining credibility for our members,” says IoIC chief executive Jennifer Sproul. “It’s our way of saying ‘You are what you do – and what you do matters’.”

The new structure offers internal communicators a pathway to progress, using their experience, skills and qualifications to upgrade their membership status.

The four membership grades are:
  • Affiliate: open to all, anyone working in IC is eligible to become an Affiliate of IoIC with no formal entry criteria.
  • Member (MIIC): Member status is a professional grade recognising achievement and experience, e.g. someone who has worked in IC for two years and holds a related qualification, like the IoIC Foundation Diploma.
  • Certified Member (CIIC): a professional membership grade for those who have demonstrated significant levels of experience and achievement, e.g. the Postgraduate Diploma in IC Management or five years’ IC experience.
  • Fellow (FIIC): Fellowship is a public, highly respected award – following a face-to-face interview – to those shaping the strategy, design, delivery or management of IC, or responsible for a significant portfolio of IC projects.
“This structure will provide immediate benefits for members and they will also build in the future,” says Jennifer. “For those Members in the professional grades (Member, Certified Member & Fellow) will now gain professional recognition with the entitlement to use the designation letters of their status to prove their standing and experience.

“They will also have the ability to advance through membership grades through their future achievements.”

Membership grades are directly linked to the professional development offered via IoIC, to include the IoIC Foundation and Advanced Diplomas

Members also get free access to case studies, industry reports and thought leadership via the members’ area of the IoIC website, a free copy of the Institute magazine InsideOut, a monthly ezine and discounts on courses and publications.

Discounts are also available to events like the annual IoIC conference, regional workshops and seminars as well as getting your work recognised by entering various IoIC award schemes.

“IoIC membership is now a demonstration of your commitment to best practice and will elevate your professional status with the opportunity to have formally-recognised letters after your name,” says Jennifer.

“Whether you’ve just started in your IC career or are an experienced practitioner, IoIC membership has never been so rewarding.”
