New report: 10 initiatives to... ensure leadership trust

Building the right team, being consistent and ‘daring to be different’ are amongst the most important things a business can do to ensure leadership trust, according to new insights from senior figures at top brands including Deloitte, Pfizer and Bentley Motors.

The findings have been included in a report titled Building Trust: 10 initiatives to help build trust, which puts forward 10 ways to ensure leadership trust, based on the opinion of global business leaders and prominent communicators. It has been prepared by leadership-driven events company Top Banana as a follow-up to a joint report with IoIC and the University of Westminster earlier this year, called Trust, Leadership & Communication.

The list also includes the need to benchmark trust and measure progress, face-to-face communication and for leaders to encourage feedback, provide purpose to their employees and be committed.

A selection of 12 leaders and communicators were asked what they think a business should do to ensure trust. Senior figures from Deloitte, Pfizer and Bentley Motors were joined by peers from SSP, which owns, operates and manages around 2,000 food and drink outlets worldwide; Aggregate Industries, part of the LafargeHolcim Group; independent delivery company Tuffnells Parcels Express; and the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

Nick Terry, managing director at Top Banana, says: “We had some fascinating insights and thanks to the contribution of some truly respected leaders, we have been able to collate what we hope will be a valuable resource for business leaders and communicators in the search for leadership trust.

“The collective opinions highlighted in our report reiterate the importance of trust.

"They also bring to light some of the attitudes, behaviours and individual initiatives that they believe are needed to build it.

“However one thing remains clear. There is no magic formula and no single textbook to follow - which is why so many organisations still struggle in search of trust.”

The 10 steps to help build and maintain leadership trust in any organisation, as featured in Building Trust are:

  1. Build the right team
  2. Benchmark trust and measure progress
  3. Be consistent
  4. Encourage feedback – and listen to it
  5. Keep colleagues informed
  6. Provide purpose
  7. Communicate face to face
  8. Dare to be different
  9. Apply context
  10. Be committed
