The IoIC is sad to learn of the passing of Tony Buckley, founder of internal communication agency AB.

One of the first agencies in the UK to specialise in employee communication, AB – from the initials of Anthony Buckley – launched in 1964, when Tony left his job with the Financial Times City print operation.

Initially a print-buying consultancy, AB quickly developed into a full-service internal communication agency specialising in employee publications. Early clients included Cunard, Allders Department Stores, Sainsbury’s, the Metropolitan Police Force and Kodak.

Tim Buckley, who was chairman of the IoIC in 2000, joined his father in the family business and took it over on Tony’s retirement, says: “Dad was a passionate advocate of excellent internal communication, not only promoting it whenever possible, but also practising it at AB as well.

“We are desperately saddened by his death. We have a massive Tony-shaped hole in our lives, but gain some comfort by the legacy he leaves, both with AB and the vast array of friends he made across the world through the IoIC in the UK and the IABC internationally.”

Suzanne Pack, president of IoIC, adds: “Tony was a true professional. With his print background, he understood and recognised the impact that printed magazines have on engaging audiences, especially internally, setting up one of the very first employee communications agencies.

“In my first IC role in Marks & Spencer, AB was our newspaper design agency and going into the AB office to work with their team and Tony’s welcoming presence was something I looked forward to.

“He was a gentleman, articulate and knowledgeable, and will be missed.”

Tony’s funeral will be held on Tuesday 22 June and the family have asked that donations are made to Crohn’s and Colitis UK.
