Factsheet: Making Complex Messages Understandable

If the core of internal communication involves finding out what’s going on in our organisations and then telling people, ‘messaging’ relates to the second bit – the choices we make about what to tell people and the words we use to tell them. 

Of course, many of the problems come when we can’t find out what’s happening – company politics, inept management, lack of training or experience on our part etc. – but overcoming those problems is the subject of a different factsheet. Assuming that we’ve got all the information we need, telling people should be simple, shouldn’t it? Well, actually, no. Almost everyone can communicate but very few people can do it well. This is one of the reasons organisations need IC professionals.

Whatever channel you’ll use to get your messages across (written stories, videos, town halls etc.) the same basic principles apply.
