The irrefutable link between communication and wellbeing

In 1948, the newly established World Health Organization defined health as a “state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. In many ways, this holistic approach to health was ahead of its time. It wasn’t until the  980s that significant progress was made in the fields of psychology and psychiatry, to the extent that common language and frameworks were developed to best define both mental wellness and its opposite, mental illness. Certainly, occupational health legislation has, since the Second World War at least, tended to prioritise physical health. While this, of course, reflects the dominance of manufacturing and infrastructure development as primary economic activities in the post-war period, many would argue that occupational health has been slow to address  ental health issues at work. As manufacturing in the UK has declined, office work and the knowledge economy have grown exponentially since the 1980s. However, it’s only in the last 15 years that the scope of occupational health has expanded to include mental health.
