This virtual learning course, delivered over two live sessions with opportunities for delegates to support and learn from one another in between, will equip internal communicators with the skills and knowledge to support line managers within their organisation to increase their own communication skills, as well as providing insights regarding the role of line managers within the communication matrix. 

 

 

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will: 

  • have a clear understanding of the communication role and its importance for line managers 
  • be familiar with the skills, techniques and tools line managers need to communicate with confidence
  • be equipped to support line managers and help them communicate better

 

The course will cover

Part One (2nd Nov, 9:30 - 12:30 (GMT))

  • line managers’ communication role, why it is important and the challenges they face
  • getting the most from communication styles
  • being clear on why we are communicating and what we need to achieve
  • articulating messages so they are clear, understandable and memorable
  • selecting the most appropriate channels to have impact
  • bringing messages to life and making them relevant and actionable
  • the importance of conversation and dialogue
  • how to engage people effectively face to face and in virtual meetings/teleconferences
  • the key role of trust and compassion in communication and how to build them
  • the power of stories and how to use them effectively

 Part Two (2nd Dec, 9:30 - 12:30 (GMT))

  • the importance of leadership communication as a key channel for internal communicators – where it fits in the channel mix
  • how leaders see communication – seeing it from their point of view
  • building a partnership with line managers and involving them in developing communication approaches
  • being treated as a valued advisor and building influence through trusted relationships with line managers
  • the principles of providing feedback and helping line managers be better communicators
  • supporting line managers, ensuring they have what they need to succeed and creating a culture of strong manager-led communication

About the trainers 

Dominic Walters has specialised in leadership and line manager communication and development for over 25 years. He has worked in senior in-house roles and as a coach and consultant in the UK, Europe, Asia and the US, supporting leadership teams across a range of sectors. He has also featured in print, podcast, TV and radio promoting effective leadership communication.

Dominic has an MA in History from Cambridge University, is an Associate of the Chartered Institute of Bankers, and past national Chairman and Fellow of the Institute of Internal Communication.

Susan Lewes-Daley consults on the design and implementation of culture change initiatives aligned to business strategy. Her achievements include the facilitation of large-scale mobilisation events, employer branding, employee engagement and leadership and management behavioural development programmes.

Susan gained her commercial and HR knowledge through working as a management consultant and then as the HR Director with Card Protection Plan, MTV Networks Europe, Viacom, Computershare and Invensys. Her Core skills include designing HR solutions that create enhanced employee engagement; employer branding; designing and developing large scale programmes that support the business objectives; training & group facilitation; and coaching: leaders, individuals and teams to achieve great results.
