This one-day, virtual crisis communications course will equip you with the skills and knowledge to protect your reputation and to prevail in a crisis. A crisis can hit the best organisations and their recovery and continuing success is determined by how effectively their people approach and manage the crisis. This online course equips you with tools and techniques to cope in any crisis. It gives you confidence to respond quickly and effectively to the media and to internal and external stakeholders, whilst maintaining your organisation’s morale and rebuilding for future success. You will have the opportunity to demonstrate the learning through practical exercises and to apply it directly to work situations.

Please note that we use Zoom and Canvas: The Learning Management Platform for our online courses. Please ensure that you are able to access these systems where you are based before booking your place.



At the end of the course, participants will know: 

  • How to establish a crisis communications team in their workplace
  • How to structure a “fit-for-purpose” crisis communications plan
  • How to create and deliver powerful key messages
  • How to keep the media, external and internal stakeholders on board
  • How to improve staff communications during crisis and beyond
  • How to establish efficient notification and monitoring systems
  • How to effectively manage social media during a crisis
  • How to reduce the negative impact of a crisis and turn it to advantage

All participants will also gain:

  • Pre and post course access to Canvas, the IoIC's online learning environment, where they will find all course materials and be able to engage with their fellow participants

About the trainer

Liz is a radio and TV professional with more than 30 years of broadcast and international news agency experience. She is a specialist in promoting communications, managerial and journalistic best practice, an accredited trainer and a qualified workplace mediator with extensive client-facing skills. She has worked as a journalist, editorial leader, trainer and senior manager both nationally and internationally for Thomson Reuters, the BBC, independent and non-profit sectors. Liz devises and delivers training programmes to improve the key communications skills needed in a constantly evolving 21st century environment and to reinforce ethical best practice in journalism. Amongst her clients are the University of Oxford, The Outward Bound Trust, The National Trust, Parliament, Thomson Reuters Foundation, Oxfam (Internal Crisis Communications), Institute of Internal Communication and Roald Dahl Marvellous Children’s Charity. Author of Reuters Global Television Operational Guidelines and co-author of Thomson Reuters Foundation’s “Making Video News”, Liz is a Royal Television Society Awards judge and an Associate of the Mediators Institute of Ireland.
