I have over 17 years’ experience of working in internal comms and passionately believe that IC plays a critical role in building trust, enhancing employee experience, supporting culture change and deepening engagement. I’m an Institute of Internal Communications (IoIC) mentor helping internal communicators to flourish and grow their careers and an IoIC Ambassador helping to promote Internal Communications as a career because it’s not always a career that comes to mind when thinking about where to start in the world of work and we need more fabulously talented people joining our profession!
Addea Amoa FIIC
Addea is a seasoned Internal Communication professional with over 20 years of experience helping people at work feel informed, connected, and purposeful. Over the last 12 years, she has focused her attention on change communication and has worked on some significant programmes at organisations such as Transport for London and Shell.
Addea lives in London with her 10-year-old daughter. Outside of work she enjoys all things art and design, listening to music, podcasts and audio books, going to concerts, and most recently, has added competing in insane fitness challenges to her list of hobbies.
Jo Bland FIIC
With a 30-year career working across a variety of communication disciplines, Jo is the proud recipient of a Comms2Point0 Lifetime Achievement Unaward, and an even prouder mum to a talented next generation communicator.
She has extensive experience in strategic organisational and transformation communications, although her passion has always been change and internal communications.
Jo has led strategic communications for a number of high profile and complex national public sector programmes and national bodies. Her career highlights include working on the internal transformation communications for the Scottish Government following devolution; establishing and leading a multidisciplinary department delivering events, public affairs, international relations, change and internal communications for NHS Digital; and leading communications for the new NHS England programme, one of the largest public sector change programmes of the last decade.
As a fellow of the Institute of Internal Communications, and member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations and Accredited Practitioner, Jo is an advocate for continuous learning. With an MSc in Strategic Communications and Public Relations, her current development focus is on AI, accessibility and inclusion.
An ambassador for communications, Jo is keen to support anyone considering whether an internal communications career pathway could be for them.
Gemma Woolley
I began my role in Internal Comms in 2022 and haven’t looked back. I love that you never stop learning. The world is constantly changing and there is always something new to explore. I’m proud to be an #IChooseIC ambassador and hope to help others discover this exciting industry that I am truly passionate about.
Laura Colantuono CIIC
Laura is a communications professional with over 12 years of experience gained in global organisations.
She’s Italian but has lived abroad for most of her life. Laura started her career as a journalist to then join Unilever Italy in 2010, where she discovered her passion for Internal Communications.
In 2014, she joined the luxury fashion brand Fendi to lead the global IC function and in 2019 she moved to London, where she joined Harrods as Internal Communications Manager. In 2020, she returned to the FMCG sector and joined The Kraft Heinz Company as Head of Internal Communications, International. After a short assignment at the fintech Klarna, she has recently joined the media company Fremantle, where she leads the global Internal Communications team.
Kirsty Bowen FIIC
Kirsty has almost 25 years’ experience in communications roles, and has built up and led the Colleague Experience function at Coventry Building Society since 2013.
Working for a mutual organisation – owned by its members – brings some great challenges, not least being creative on a modest budget. But she wouldn’t swap working for such a purpose-led organisation for the world. With her role focusing on colleague comms, engagement, wellbeing and voice, colleague experience is a top priority across the organisation.
Kirsty is an IoIC Fellow, an #IChoseIC Ambassador and regularly supports the judging of IoIC’s Awards. She also co-chairs a Financial Services Internal Comms Forum.
Edeje Onwude
Edeje is a seasoned brand marketing and communications expert with over a decade of experience driving the growth of iconic brands, including Coca-Cola, Henkel, and Reckitt. Unlike many communicators, she made an intentional pivot into Internal Communications and is currently seeking her next opportunity in the field.
Edeje is passionate about empowering people to discover careers that align with their natural talents, enabling them to thrive. She is equally dedicated to championing Internal Communications as a dynamic and impactful career path. In her role as a board member for the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC UK & I), she leads the mentoring program and student partnerships. Edeje will now expand this mission as an ambassador for the #IChoseIC campaign.

Misty Oosthuizen
With over 30 years of experience in communications, people engagement, and people change management, I am dedicated to creating inclusive workplaces where everyone can thrive authentically. My journey began in South Africa, where the vibrant culture and diverse communities shaped my passion for people and storytelling. This passion led me to a career in internal communications (IC), where I could combine my love for creative storytelling with strategic thinking to drive meaningful change within organisations. Throughout my career, I've led global communication initiatives at major organisations like DHL eCommerce and Santander, enhancing people engagement and fostering inclusive cultures. My approach is hands-on and practical, always putting people first and ensuring that every voice is heard and valued.
I chose internal communications because effective communication is the heartbeat of a thriving workplace. It’s not just about sharing information - it's about building authentic connections, inspiring teams, and creating a genuine sense of belonging. As an #IChoseIC Ambassador, I champion this career because it allows for creativity, innovation, and a focus on people. It's about building trust, ensuring everyone feels secure and valued at work. Through IC, I help organisations align their values and strategies with the needs and aspirations of their people, driving both engagement and business success.
Shalini Gupta FIIC
With over two decades of international experience, Shalini has extensive experience of advising leadership teams during periods of change and delivering communications that drive successful business outcomes. Shalini's career highlights include roles across India, Middle East and the UK at RSA, GE Capital, Aviva, BT, NatWest group and since Sept 2022 at Arup where she is the Head of Internal Communications for the UKIMEA region. In her current role, Shalini has established a talented team who thrive on connecting people to the organisation’s purpose, bringing the stories of colleagues and clients they support to life. As a passionate Fellow of the IoIC, Shalini is a keen mentor for young talent and champions diversity of voice within our industry.
Hannah Harriman
I am the Internal Communications Business Partner at Gallagher – yes, the company who brings you State of the Sector (no pressure)!
I started my internal communications journey in September 2021, my work background has always been in the pensions industry and I was given the incredible opportunity to move into my current role. Had I know about internal communications as a career path earlier in my life, I definitely feel like I would have perused it as an option sooner. In 2023, I completed my foundation diploma in internal communications through the IoIC and this has opened up many opportunities for me.
As well as promoting internal communications as a career option, I’m also passionate about building an internal communications network across my home city of Sheffield and the rest of Yorkshire and really look forward to the opportunities that being an #IChoseIC Ambassador can bring me.
Kayleigh Jackson
In the world of IC Kayleigh is still seen as a newbie with less than 10 years’ dedicated experience to comms and engagement. But what she lacks in years’ experience she makes up for with a hands-on, sleeves up approach to get to know her target audience. With expertise in Internal Communications strategy, digital solutions, culture building her passion to build relationships helps to deliver communications with purpose! Kayleigh has worked in a range of industries from the energy market, transport and insurance in both UK and global companies. Whilst it wasn’t the original career path Kayleigh thoroughly enjoys creating stories, content hunting and helping improve the overall employee experience. And does so much more than make a comms look pretty.
Cathy Lee
I worked in publishing, as a journalist on local papers and then in various press officer and head of communications roles before I moved into internal comms more than 10 years’ ago. I enjoy internal comms the most, but it wasn’t a career I knew much about before I moved into it!
Therefore, I wanted to be an #IChoseIC Ambassador, so I can share with others what this career offers. As it’s all about people, it can be fun, demanding, inspiring and frustrating in equal measure, but is never dull.
There are many routes you can follow to start out and then progress in internal comms, and I’m keen to support anyone who wants to find out more.
Melanie Hinds
A 25 year career in professional communications with 14 of these dedicated to internal communications. I have helped organisations to achieve their strategic objectives and include the role of internal communications as a critical part of their business success.
Internal communications advice and strategic delivery can work across all business areas, helping employees to understand their organisation and feel better connected to it. It can work two-way, in that it can also support employees to be positive advocates and influencers, to enrich organisational culture and the employer brand.
Within a team, internal communications professionals can diversify and nurture specific skills around technology, audio-visual media, best practice copy delivery, strategic planning, project management, accessibility, event management and more.

Kate Goodman
Kate has over 20 years’ experience working in communications. Starting out in marketing communications, Kate enjoyed a senior in-house internal communications role with the RAC for almost 9 years before deciding to explore freelance opportunities.
She’s provided in-house communications support to brands including Molson Coors (Carling, Doom Bar, et al), Inchcape, Dignity Funerals, Sopra Steria, Wolseley, and West Midlands Railway, among others, and has also worked agency side supporting household names with IC campaigns.
Kate’s strong track record has seen her win numerous awards - from recognition at the film industry’s EVCOM for video content, to a myriad of accolades at the Institute of Internal Communications for strategic and creative solutions. In addition, she has been a guest speaker and contributor to industry publications and podcasts, including the Institute of Internal Communications and Silicon Reef.
Kate is also co-author of Woman of Our Time. Released in 2023, the book is about using reflective practice to help women take small steps to take control and find their way.
Outside of work, Kate enjoys yoga, walking her dog and learning languages (her latest addition is Old English!). She’s also part way through her next book project.
Volunteering as an #IChoseIC Ambassador was a natural choice for Kate.

I started my role in Internal Comms just over 2 years' ago and couldn’t enjoy it more. I genuinely love every day at work and the projects I get to dive into. Alongside the day job, I’m a member of FutureNet committee and a #IChooseIC ambassador. I wish I had known Internal Comms was a career path much earlier on and hope to help more people discover just how rewarding this career can be.
Stephanie Hodgson
I’m an Internal Communications Manager at Nuclear Transport Solutions, bringing a fresh perspective to the field with three years of experience. I began my career as an apprentice, choosing a different path from the traditional university route. In September 2023, I proudly completed my Foundation Diploma with the Institute of Internal Communication
I love my role and I’m passionate about being an #IChooseIC ambassador, where I aim to inspire others to explore this often-overlooked industry. Living in Cumbria, I’ve noticed a lack of internal communication roles in the North, and I’m committed to working towards changing that.
In my personal time, I enjoy walking my cocker spaniel, Nellie, and have a keen interest in travelling.
Sarah Wood
I've worked in internal communications for 10 years, specialising in communicating with international teams and operational colleagues. Career highlights include working with Train Managers during the launch of a new fleet of trains at Eurostar and keeping colleagues connected and engaged through the opening of London’s newest rail network at MTR Elizabeth line.
Moving away from rail, I now work in logistics real estate - after loving trains, I realised I’m also fascinated by warehouses!
I’m one of those people who fell into internal communications after completing a part-time diploma in journalism early in my career. I wish I’d chosen internal communications straight out of university, but I didn’t know it existed, which is why I’m passionate about promoting it. It’s such a business-critical role and can be lots of fun.
Jacqueline Ryan
I am a passionate and strategic communications leader with over 10 years of experience in internal communications across global organisations. As an internal communications professional, I partner closely with business leaders and colleagues to deliver impactful messaging that supports business strategy - driving growth, shaping culture and fostering employee engagement.
I love to collaborate and simplify complexity, always acting as an advocate for the power of clear, purposeful communication. Having studied a degree in microbiology, worked in front-line environments and found my way into the world of internal communication, I’m excited to be part of the IoIC ambassador community. I want to champion and support the growth of this very welcoming and rewarding profession, meaning that more people actively consider and choose internal communications as a career path.
Nicola Phillips
I’ve been working in internal communications for five years, and in that time, I’ve gone from no experience to completing the IOIC Advanced Diploma and becoming an Internal Communications Manager at the No7 Beauty Company.
My approach is simple: put yourself in the audience’s shoes and ask what will make the biggest difference. Whether it’s a campaign, a channel, or a piece of content, I want it to connect and have impact. I’m proud of how much I’ve grown in a short time and excited to continue my development.
I’m passionate about being an IC Ambassador because internal communications wasn’t even on my radar until the ripe old age of 32. Before discovering this career, I had no idea that helping people engage could be a profession - and now I can’t imagine doing anything else.
Danielle Starling
Danielle has spent 13 years working in internal comms across public sector organisations, including housing, education and defence, always aiming to put employees at the heart of everything she does. Danielle spends most of her free time negotiating with a toddler and two cats, singing Taylor Swift loudly and badly, and indulging her tabletop and console gaming hobbies when she can.
Leah Booker
I am the Internal Communications Executive at Shoosmiths LLP. My journey into internal communication (IC) began in August 2023, when I saw a secondment opportunity in our internal newsletter. As the newsletter goes firmwide, I had my doubts whether I would be successful and to my surprise, I was!
It was the first time I had heard of the function and really liked the idea of creating a sense of belonging. I wanted to learn more about the firm’s strategy and the opportunity to be creative. I was a Legal PA before moving into the role and I had many transferable qualities, for example, strong attention to detail, excellent time management, written and verbal skills. So, if you have these qualities, you will be great in IC.
I studied English at university back in 2018 and loved the idea of planning, editing and drafting content. If I had known about the career at university, I would have pursued it. Therefore, I became an #IChoseIC ambassador so young people know what the function is and why it is so important for the effective running of an organisation.
In 2025, I completed my Foundation Diploma in IC through the IoIC, which has massively increased my confidence. I feel empowered to advise stakeholders on best practice IC and how to structure news stories, which I did not have before. Outside of work, I love reading, running and I study Spanish via Duolingo (I used to live in Spain when I was 10) and hope to become fluent one day.
