Leading IC with Agility and Impact

I lead Internal Communications at Blick Rothenberg, shaping how our people connect with the business and its strategy. As a team of one, IoIC provides an invaluable sounding board, a place to validate approaches, stay close to best practice and access practical tools that help me move quickly. For lean IC functions, it’s an essential extension of your team.

From Accidental Start to Passionate Practitioner

My career in IC began by accident, transitioning from PR agency into an internal role at a global law firm (it was the corporate benefits I was after). Nearly a decade later, what keeps me passionate is the opportunity to deeply understand an organisation: what motivates people, what shapes culture and how communication can meaningfully shift behaviour. I’m particularly interested in change communications, helping people navigate complex journeys and adopt new technologies and ways of working.

The Power of a Professional Community

IoIC gives me access to the collective intelligence of the profession. Because no two IC roles or organisational cultures are the same, the ability to learn from peers and benchmark thinking is incredibly valuable.

A Defining Career Moment in a Crisis

Early in my IC career, the Covid‑19 pandemic forced me to grow fast. Overnight I moved from drafting and managing editorial content to supporting real‑time leadership communication, translating fast‑moving government guidance and shaping critical messages under pressure. The experience really enhanced my confidence and capability in a way no traditional development programme could have. A challenging moment and not one I’m keen to repeat given the wider context.

Advice for IC Newcomers: Lean Into Your Strengths

There’s no one personality type that defines success in IC. Early on, I felt pressure to be highly extroverted, but I’ve learned that thoughtful analysis, deep listening and strong one‑to‑one relationships are equally powerful. Know your strengths, lean into them and find roles that allow you to use them fully.

And One Unexpected Truth…

I have zero artistic ability; my art teacher strongly encouraged me not to take GCSE Art. A humbling moment at 12, but the right call.
