My role and how IOIC membership has shaped my career

I’m currently a Senior Manager in Internal Communications which means I’m working strategically, leading global communications on transformation projects and advising stakeholders on how best to communicate.

I’ve been a member of the IOIC for a few years now and through the networking events I’ve been to (including the sunny conferences!) the courses I’ve taken and the opportunity to be a #IChoseIC Ambassador, it’s really helped shape my career.

How I accidentally fell into internal communication and never looked back

I saw an internal job opening at the company I was working for many years ago for an Internal Communications Officer and to be honest, had no idea what that meant. However, the job looked super fun and my skills, knowledge and experience matched the job criteria and I got it!

One of the main reasons I love it is that I get to work with people in every team at every level of seniority. I’m a ‘people person’ so I enjoy spending time with the teams, understanding my audience and hearing what matters most to them.

How IOIC has expanded my network and sparked new ideas

Being a member of the IOIC has expanded my network and I’ve met a lot of incredible people through attending events they’ve organised. I know that being the only internal comms professional in a team or company can be quite a lonely place, so it’s always refreshing talking to others who may be going through the same challenges as you. I’ve learnt a lot through the networking opportunities membership has given me and have come away with some great ideas that I’ve implemented in the workplace, including systems to gather feedback from colleagues, which has been very useful.

Leading a skills session at the London School of Economics

As a #IChoseIC Ambassador, I recently led a skills session workshop at the London School of Economics and found that an incredibly rewarding and enjoyable experience. The students were really engaged and had loads of questions about working in internal communication. I’m looking forward to getting more involved with the Ambassador role, running more sessions in the future and spreading the message that internal comms is a great career path to follow.

My advice: don't be afraid to try new things

Don’t be afraid to try new things. Technology changes rapidly and there are always new and fun ways of communicating to your audiences. If something doesn’t quite work, that’s ok! You can learn from it and change it for the future.

A fun fact about me

I’m really good at parking.
