Accessible communication, by design.
Accessible communication, by design.
A free training session, exclusive to IOIC members.
Accessible communication starts at the design stage, not as a fix at the end. In this 90-minute online session, you’ll explore accessibility as part of inclusive behaviour, why it matters from both a human and a legal point of view, and practical tips for making your communication more accessible across different channels.
You’ll also look at AI through an accessibility lens: where it helps, where it falls short, and what to watch for when you use it.
This isn’t a technical tutorial, so we won’t go through Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) compliance in detail. Instead, you’ll build your awareness of disability and accessibility and leave with a set of practical resources to use afterwards.
Overall the session will cover:
- Diversity, inclusion and accessibility. How they connect.
- Accessible by design. Why it matters, from a human and a legal point of view.
- Written communication and video. Key accessibility issues, from links and visuals to page layout in Word, PowerPoint, websites, SharePoint and Viva Engage.
- Disability language etiquette. How to talk about, and to, your audiences in a disability-inclusive way.
- AI and accessibility. The pros and cons of AI-generated content.
- Your questions. Time for questions, comments and observations.
Learning outcomes:
- Feel more disability aware and confident that your communication is accessible
- Build disability inclusion into your strategies, plans and copy from the start
- Know the legislation on accessible communication
- Weigh up the pros and cons of AI-generated content through an accessibility lens
