One area where AI is failing to deliver impact is recruitment and hiring. If anything, it has made already inadequate processes worse. Algorithmic bias is rife and only cookie-cutter candidates seem to make it to the shortlist.

This is leading to age discrimination, with people in their forties and fifties struggling to secure new job opportunities. Years of accumulated deep experience, knowledge and wisdom get overlooked and disregarded as they are impossible to whittle down in the overly standardised CV structure recruitment algorithms demand.

In an already shrinking labour market, this is a disaster. In this episode, Jen, Dom and Cat chat with Victoria Tomlinson about why tapping into the talents of the over-fifties is one of the biggest opportunities in business today.

About Victoria Tomlinson

Victoria Tomlinson has spent her career challenging who gets to succeed at work and how. At EY she led a culture change programme for the London office, taking responsibility for a team of over 100 people who had been overlooked in the firm's client service focus – and making sure they weren't. She went on to run a communications business for 30 years, training organisations for the CIPR on making internal communications drive strategic goals, and was named CIPR Communicator of the Year in Yorkshire. As CEO of Next-Up she now advises boards and senior leaders on skills shortages, workforce change and how to unlock the value of experienced talent – including how AI can capture and scale critical expertise. A TEDx speaker and BBC commentator, her book Expiry Date Never makes the case that experience doesn't have an expiry date. Neither does ambition.
