Accessible Communication
This two-part course provides in-depth guidance for making any kind of communication accessible.
Including demos and practical activities, the course will cover key accessibility principles and best practice for written comms, images and videos, websites, events and meetings (remote and F2F).
With a focus on accessibility by design, attendees will learn how to approach disability inclusion when designing communication strategies, plans and copy, as well as disability language etiquette.
The course will explore AI and accessibility, including considering the pros and cons and understanding assistive technologies.
The course will also cover key legislation, including the newest regulations to ensure you are fully up-to-date and compliant.
Who should attend?
This training is designed for anyone who would like to learn more in detail about accessible communications (incl face-to-face or remote events and meetings), AI and accessibility, and disability language etiquette.
The course is useful for all Profession Levels of the Profession Map, but particularly for Levels 1, 2, and 3.

Learning objectives
By the end of the course, delegates will:
- Be more disability-aware and know the legislation governing accessible communications, including the newest regulations.
- Know key communications accessibility principles and best practice for written comms, images and videos, websites and events (remote and F2F).
- Think about disability inclusion upfront when designing communication strategies, plans and copy.
- Understand the pros and cons of AI-generated IC through an accessibility lens.
The course will cover

- Understanding disability: challenging assumptions and promoting inclusion
- The social model of disability
- What is accessibility and why is it important?
- The legal context – the laws and regulations governing the requirement for accessibility in communications. Introduction to WCAG principles. Government Communication Service (GCS) and Business Disability Forum (BDF) accessible communications guidelines
- High-level overview of assistive technologies
- Accessible written communications.
Short quiz on accessibility awareness.
Part Two: 4th December, 13:00 - 16:30 (GMT)
- Accessible and inclusive images
- Accessible videos and podcasts
- Accessible websites and online content
- Accessible meetings and events
- Disability language etiquette
- AI and accessibility.
