Writing Skills for the IC Professional: Virtual Learning

This virtual learning course, delivered over two live sessions with opportunities for delegates to support and learn from one another in between, will equip internal communicators with the skills and knowledge to write confidently and effectively across a variety of channels and for a range of audiences.

The course will look at planning, structuring and writing content; adapting writing for different channels and audiences; and using technique to bring your writing to life, as well as fundamental skills around grammar, editing and proofing. 

Please note that there is an overlap of content in this course and the IoIC Foundation Diploma. This course is not recommended for someone who is currently undertaking or has previously completed our Foundation Diploma.

Learning objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will: 

  • Have confidence in their own writing ability
  • Be able to adapt their writing for different audiences and channels
  • Be able to advise colleagues on good writing practice

Who should attend?

The course is most suitable for internal communication professionals who are either new to internal communication or have limited experience of writing for internal channels and audiences.

It is also suitable for those looking to refresh their knowledge and skills of the core principles of good writing.

This course is aligned to the Creating and Curating Content and Conversation area of the IoIC profession map and specifically covers the knowledge and skills described at levels one and two.

Part One, 11th June, 14:00 - 17:30 (BST)

  • How to plan your content
  • How to structure news stories
  • How to write strong headlines
  • How to adapt your writing for different channels
  • How to adapt your writing for different audiences

Part Two, 18th June, 14:00 - 17:30 (BST)

  • How to apply technique to bring your writing to life
  • The basics of grammar
  • How to edit with confidence
  • How to proof with precision

Please note that we use Zoom and Canvas: The Learning Management Platform for our online courses. Please ensure that you are able to access these systems where you are based before booking your place. All times are in BST.

Optional Course Add-On

Recieve feedback on your writing. 

As an optional course add-on, after the course participants can submit a piece of their own work (up to 500 words) for review by the course tutor.

This is an opportunity to get specific feedback on your writing and put your learnings from the course into practice.

Feedback is provided in track changes along with a short critique of 250 words.

Submissions must be received no later than one week after the course has finished and feedback will be provided within two weeks.

Writing Piece Add-on: £100+VAT.
