At the end of 2022, Arm had been through multiple years of change, including the pandemic and a new leadership team that was looking to prepare to take the company public. Arm remained a fantastic place to work, with a huge business opportunity, but it needed to bolster belief in its direction and provide a positive new vision for employees.
In this session, Adele McIntosh, Arm’s VP of Internal Communications and Community, will talk about how the creation of Arm’s North Star helped to provide clarity and positivity as the company looked ahead to new challenges; how you can integrate internal comms with other functions to get better outcomes; and why sometimes you need to ignore best practice to do what’s right for your organization and people.

EMIS is mid-way through an ambitious programme to become an employer of choice by 2025. They are creating a workplace that employees are proud to be part of, to retain and attract the best talent.
None of this would be possible without excellent internal communications. It’s the essential connection between company leadership, culture and strategy, and the hearts and minds of employees, building trust and integrity in the relationship between the company its employees.
That’s why 92% of employees completed our most recent employee feedback survey, and why employee engagement is at an all-time high of 74%.
They've learned so much on their journey to creating an inspirational and engaging workplace culture. In this session Jo will share the vital role of data-driven internal communication, looking at how EMIS has increased employee engagement, retention and recruitment figures, and how you can create the same for your organisation.

In 2022, nursing staff across the UK went on strike for the first time ever.
But nursing staff weren't the only ones who were new to strike action: Royal College of Nursing (RCN) staff were too. The RCN’s internal communications team were tasked with helping staff understand the legal parameters of strike action, convincing them to head from the comfort of their homes into the chaos of nursing workplaces in the wake of COVID-19, and then support them through the conversations they were to have with RCN members.
Because if nursing staff were going to vote for strike action, they needed to be willing to leave their patients to take it.
This session will explore how the internal communications team helped mobilise almost the entire workforce of the Royal College of Nursing with no extra budget, no extra people and no prior knowledge of industrial action.

The past year saw “The Great Return” with several high profile media stories of employers and employees at loggerheads as bosses sought to transition back to office-based working arrangements. This led to many workplaces dealing with “the flexibility dilemma”: Recognition that flexible work has benefits for employees and employers alike, but also sensing that less face-to-face time may be detrimental to forging relationships and strong company cultures.
This contribution shares some of the speaker’s original PhD research on belonging in remote and hybrid teams, with an emphasis on immersive technology for social connection in the workplace. The audience will be taken on a journey from “the cave” to “the spatial internet” in order to share a deeper understanding of what belonging means from an evolutionary perspective, and how Internal Communicators can help recreate this human need in an age of virtual teams.

This will be an interactive and practical session. They will explore what listening means, the benefits from effective listening and what gets in the way. Every year IC professionals are inundated with new trends to follow and implement. This can feel overwhelming at times especially when stakeholders want to try every new tool. However, there is one tool that has been successfully used for centuries and will ensure that internal comms people can communicate authentically, listen, and interact with their stakeholders. That tool is storytelling.
During this session, you will learn how you can easily apply business storytelling in many aspects of your work to make sure trends are in line with the company's goal and purpose.

How can employee communication teams make the biggest impact with limited resources? How can you use data to demonstrate the science behind your art, securing a seat at all the right tables for employee comms?
We all instinctively know the impact visible leadership has on how colleagues in our organisations think, feel, and act. The right leadership behaviours, in the right voice and tone, can make the difference between an unmotivated collection of employees lacking in direction, and a unified team who feel valued to drive towards a common goal and who advocate for your organisation.
In a world where every stakeholder wants their message to be the most important one, how do we demonstrate credibly and with impact that we know what leadership behaviours, what tone and what messages will make the biggest difference for them? To reach consensus on where to focus your team’s resource and what topics and activity to prioritise that will influence the right outcomes, you need to cut through those sometimes conflicting priorities with guidance backed by statistical evidence that really works.
In Barclays, monthly iterative colleague surveying is enabling us to test hypotheses into which leadership behaviours matter most to colleagues. It’s allowing us to look at different aspects of tone of voice, identify what resonates most with different audiences, and it is helping us to identify which themes of content are more likely to make colleagues want to stay and thrive within Barclays.
Find out how Barclays is using data and insight to shape their communications approach, as partners and trusted counsel for senior leadership on how to use their influence to build trust and advocacy with colleagues.

Sustainability is no longer an option for business. It’s a commercial imperative. You may have a strategy; but if you can’t communicate it meaningfully, you won’t drive progress.
Employee engagement is vital. People need to understand your organisation’s ambitions and why they are important.
Internal communicators play a vital role ensuring employees are engaged and inspired to get involved. Here’s where the relationship between sustainability and internal comms becomes a critical enabler of success, to raise awareness, connect, educate and mobilise behaviour change.
In this session you’ll hear from Verity London, a B Corp responsible business and sustainability consultancy, together with their client, global law film Pinsent Masons.
Together they will share how they re-defined Pinsent Masons’ responsible business narrative and messaging, using data-driven insight to achieve reach and resonance across international teams. And how we deepened that relationship with the IC team, strengthening internal engagement around the topics which matter.

This session will focus on how in-house teams can leverage their insight and organisational knowledge, along with the voice of employees, to create a compelling narrative that captures their organisation’s employee value proposition (EVP). Every organisation’s EVP is unique, so creating something that feels authentic and resonates with colleagues is a challenge! In creating a new EVP for Voyage Care, the team drew upon our deep understanding of the organisation and all the evidence and research outputs at our disposal, to develop people-focused concepts. The project was delivered in house, from concept to execution, so there are reflections and learnings to share from each stage of the journey.
This session will explore how Voyage Care created an EVP that is unique to its organisation, with employee voice at the heart of it. It will cover the creative approach, the relationship between EVP and existing organisational artefacts, and how the team developed something our colleagues demonstrably feel represents their experiences.

Discussions and discourse in the public sphere shape tone, content, and frequency of internal communications.
Debates during election periods prove to be particularly challenging for internal communication, mainly due to their negative language and polarised atmosphere. This is when organisations may need to tailor internal messaging carefully to maintain transparency, foster culture of open dialog and support employees on many different levels.
Understanding how heated public debate impacts employees’ perception, awakes economic uncertainty, and affects consumer behaviour is the key to providing effective communication when a public debate takes over public perception. This knowledge will serve internal communication professionals well now and in the future.

High-performing IC teams undertake periodic research to understand what their audience want and need – and to confirm they have the resources and governance in place to deliver.
This is less about proving what’s delivering well now, and more about envisioning the optimum future state and operating model. A review helps you explore best practice in the wider industry, and the form and function of best-in-class IC teams, applying that outside-in perspective to your organisational design.
Uncovering any gaps (and opportunities) in channel performance, skills or team structure is only part of the picture. If we discover that structural changes would improve your ability to deliver strategic objectives and outcomes, you need to be ready to shore up your team’s foundations to make a case for additional IC investment.
This is exactly what Santander did earlier this year — making the business case for significant investment and organisational restructuring.

By 2024, the AI market is projected by IDC to reach $554.3 billion (Weiss, 2020). This shows business cannot ignore AI as a disruptive force. GenAI has disrupted the disruptors, but having said that is it crucial to understand how change that driven by AI is managed by organisations at large.
Change management isn't just about introducing new systems; it's about managing the human elements of these changes. A study by the Harvard Business Review points out that 70% of change initiatives fail due to resistance from employees and a lack of adequate communication (Carucci, 2019).
The trick is not to see AI as a danger but as a tool that can improve efficiency and open new opportunities.
Consequently, the adoption of AI involves more than just technological advancements. Instead, it's a transformational process that profoundly affects every business area. The truth is that internal communication is essential to the successful deployment of AI and is neither supplementary nor optional, as evidenced by real-world examples from industries like banking, healthcare, and academics amongst others.
The human element represented by excellent internal communication remains crucial to this transformation as the workplace progresses toward an AI-infused future.
Change management isn't just about introducing new systems; it's about managing the human elements of these changes.

This session will delve into multigenerational communication within the modern workplace. As organisations become increasingly age-diverse, understanding and bridging communication gaps between generations has never been more critical.
It will begin by exploring the unique communication styles and preferences of the different generations present in today’s workforce - from the experienced Baby Boomers and adaptable Generation Xers, to the tech-savvy Millennials and the emerging Gen Z. Each generation brings its own set of values, experiences, and expectations to the table, influencing their approach to communication and collaboration.
Then it will address common misconceptions and challenges that arise in multigenerational communication. By debunking stereotypes and highlighting the strengths of each generation, we pave the way for a more inclusive and effective dialogue.
Central to the discussion is the application of Emma's own principles from previous work within the pharmaceutical industry, fintech and PWC, which emphasise the importance of behavioural science in understanding and improving team dynamics. Strategies for fostering an environment where different generations feel heard, respected, and valued will be discussed. This includes practical tips for enhancing clarity, empathy, and engagement across generational lines.
The session will also touch upon the role of technology in multigenerational communication, examining how digital tools can both bridge and create divides. The importance of adapting communication methods to suit diverse preferences without losing the personal touch is emphasised.
Then it will wrap up with actionable steps and best practices for leaders and team members to cultivate a culture of effective multigenerational communication. By embracing these strategies, organisations can harness the full potential of their diverse workforce, leading to enhanced collaboration, innovation, and business success.

Your speaking voice is your most powerful communication tool, yet for most of us we give it almost no thought (unless something goes wrong). Our focus is usually on WHAT we’re saying (facts, figures and data), not HOW we’re saying it (clarity, freedom, expression and authenticity).
This is not about changing your accent but about allowing your true voice to emerge, so you can feel more confident and communicate more authentically.
In this interactive session Anouska will be sharing more about how we hold our voice back, why we hold our voice back and some practical ways you can begin to allow your true powerful voice to emerge. Come prepared to explore your voice and have some fun!

This session will provide insight into the challenges and opportunities that come with working in the third sector, and smaller organisations.
Despite facing the same or similar challenges that larger private corporates have when it comes to employee communications, change communications, culture, and employee experience these organisations often lack the financial resources to invest similar amounts as their private and corporate counterparts. With much of the latest tech solutions, and additional headcount being out of their budgets, how can IC professionals working as a team of one make an impact?

This session is about language and story-telling techniques to bring more impact to communication. Organisational language can feel repetitive, jargonistic and inaccessible. And when realities don’t match stated expectations, words can feel meaningless and washed out into white noise.
The session explore how visual thinking can help you to ‘peel back the words’ to bring more meaning, shared understanding and impact to engagement and collaboration. We’ll explore through the lens of organisational culture and behaviours, so this session is particularly relevant to IC professionals working with internal change, who are managing strategic tensions and wanting more meaningful, inclusive staff engagement.
