Dominika Rogers, Internal Control Coordinator at ENGIE UK, shares how the Foundation Diploma transformed her approach to communication, shifting her mindset from message delivery to meaningful engagement.
The Diploma was a real eye-opener, showing me that internal communication is so much more than simply delivering messages. It gave me a strategic perspective, helping me focus on tailoring communications based on the audience and the purpose behind each message.
I also realised the importance of measuring impact and driving engagement, rather than acting like a “postal service” and hoping messages reach everyone. A two-way communication process is vital to ensure messages are not only read but understood. This shift in mindset has made me more intentional and thoughtful in every piece of communication I create.
I use the knowledge gained from the Foundation Diploma every day. While I’m not currently in a formal internal communications role, my job involves communicating with various stakeholders and issuing reports and updates. Now, I’m far more mindful about how I structure emails and present information, ensuring clarity and relevance.
As part of the Engagement Team and in my role as a Mental Health First Aider (MHFA), I create posts for employee channels, design feedback forms, and help drive initiatives. Since completing the Diploma, I’ve changed how I approach these communications -keeping messages concise yet informative, and tailoring content for different employee groups to avoid a “one-size-fits-all” approach.
I’ve also shared tips and suggestions with our Internal Comms Team on increasing engagement and making content more accessible and impactful. It’s rewarding to see how these small changes can make a big difference.
I’ve gained a wealth of knowledge and practical skills. The most impactful topics for me were audience segmentation and channel strategy - understanding that different channels serve different purposes was a game-changer. Email isn’t the only option, and choosing the right channel can significantly improve engagement.
The course also boosted my confidence. Even though I’m not in a formal IC role, I felt empowered to share what I learned with colleagues. Passing the Diploma added credibility to my work - someone even called me a “Comms Queen,” which was lovely to hear!
My favourite module was on storytelling and writing skills. It highlighted how the way we structure messages matters more than we think. Storytelling can transform communication from functional to truly engaging.
Absolutely! Whether you’re starting out in IC, have some experience, or like me, are looking to move into your first IC role, this course is a fantastic way to learn how to make communications impactful, relevant, and engaging.
